So as long as you are mounted, you can use a lance in one hand. The Dual Wielder feat allows you to use two-weapon fighting with any one-handed melee weapon, so this works fine. As for the damage die, the damage die for the lance is a d12, and there's nothing in its special property or in the dual-wielding rules that would change this.

If you were riding a standard horse, as a DM I might have some qualms about you using dual lances. But a paladin with his own Find Steeed horse could telepathically control its movements, therefore I would allow it. Sign up to join this community. The best answers are voted up and rise to the top.

It only takes a minute to sign up. Also, a lance requires two hands to wield when you aren't mounted. As we can see above, the lance does not have the two handed or versatile properties; one of which is required to benefit from the Great Weapon Fighting fighting style :.

When you roll a 1 or 2 on a damage die for an attack you make with a melee weapon that you are wielding with two hands, you can reroll the die and must use the new roll, even if the new roll is a 1 or a 2.

The weapon must have the two-handed or versatile property for you to gain this benefit. You could use Two-Weapon fighting instead if you are mounted and take the Dual Wielder feat, though.

5e SRD:Lance

But only while you're mounted ; this weapon's special property states that when you aren't, it "requires two hands to wield". Because of this, Duelingwhich requires that you use the weapon in one hand, can only apply while you are mounted:.

While there may be ways of getting around thisa previous edit suggested you were planning a fighter or paladin, and the linked solutions wouldn't work there. If you're thinking of playing a mounted melee character, the lance gives you reach without the two handed requirement if you're mounted and does more damage than any other weapon with that property d12 is the highest damage dice available for official weapons.

This means if you're playing, say, a mounted fighter, he can wield a d12 weapon in one hand with a shield or secondary weapon in the other if you take the dual wielder feat - Lance doesn't have the light propertywhich is pretty impressive! So in Summary:.

Reach - esp. A free hand if you're mounted meaning a shield or if you take Dual Wielder a second weapon. Imagine 2 lances! However: Within 5 feet attacks are at a disadvantage, so unless you have some way of keeping your foes outside of normal melee range 5 ftif you want the lance as your primary weapon you're going to be either missing a lot more or provoking attacks of opportunity almost every turn, which sucks a fair bit.

This is the price you pay for the above advantages, though Dueling could help offset it if you don't intend to put anything in your other hand. Opportunity attacks could be avoided by using the Mount's limited action, as the mount is the one doing the moving. Thanks to guildsbounty for pointing that out! In 5e the lance is a martial melee weapon with two properties: reach and special.

While it lacks the two-handed property, the specific special rules for the lance state that if used while not mounted it requires two hands to use, so even with the feat it could only be used for two-weapon fighting from horseback. Best case for two-weapon fighting with the lance might be a mounted character not using all their movement, attacking a foe 10 feet away with the lance, then moving the horse within 5 feet to attack using a bonus action with a one-handed melee weapon in their other hand.

The two-weapon fighting rules do not say you cannot move in between the Attack action and the bonus action to attack with the second weapon. This would require the Dual Wielder feat, as above.

They could use their Hex Warrior feature to allow them to use Charisma when using a lance, whether a regular one or one summoned with the Pact of the Blade feature.

If you use a Lance with a Kobold, you can use your lance without disadvantage at close range, since your mount counts as an ally. Additionally, the Kobold's small size and light weight means that you can use mounts of smaller size. My Kobold Cavalier, for example, wields a lance and rides a Giant Weasel. I cannot find a single bit of info on this subject. My group shares around the DMing between our three different on-going and concurrent campaigns, and twice now this issue has come up. Granted there is the DM fiat which I always abide by, even though if grudgingly. So another lance is then taken up from a squire, for another "run". But here's my misgivings on said breakage.

It is also historically known that lances designed for jousting had the metal piercing tip removed and were purposefully blunted, then capped with carved wooden or pourly cast read as brittle iron fists, balls and even small hand-sized shields. This was done to remove the armor-piercing possible death. Thus, when the blunt force of the lances in jousting made full contact, it could more easily bend and break. And if my roll was a miss, it's a d2 roll that instead the lance broke upon impact to their armor.

I know of no other weapon in 5e that has such a cost, in both the heat of battle and at the armory. My only hope of salvaging these two costs are to [1] always hit, then 'No-Action' drop it, followed by a Free Action to pull my Warhammer, 1 and [2] always roll a 2 on the d2. The only thing close to something being 'single use' is if it is concerned ammunition such as arrows.

But even those have rules around recovery. The lance is simply another weapon, like a longsword, longbow, or spear and follows the same rules regarding it's ability to be used more than once. There are even some weapons, like the netwhich can be destroyed as a means of removing them from a creature who has been attacked with it. The lance does not have language like this. This makes the RAW indicate that the lance is usable again and again, just like longswords, javelins, or spears.

If your DM wants to houserule that they are single-use, that is well within their power to do so, but it is adding a mechanic that doesn't actually exist within the rules around those weapons. However, there is no rule in the core rulebooks that says a lance breaks or is lost on a hit.

It's just another melee weapon. You have disadvantage when you use a lance to attack a target within 5 feet of you. Also, a lance requires two hands to wield when you aren't mounted. There's no rule that says a lance breaks on a hit or embeds itself into an opponent.

This appears to be a rule invented by your DM, probably with the intent of adding realism. Wikipedia's take on whether or not a lance breaks or impales in reality:. The centre of the shaft of [jousting] lances could be designed to be hollow, in order for it to break on impact, as a further safeguard against impalement. They were often at least 4m long, and had hand guards built into the lance, often tapering for a considerable portion of the weapon's length.

These are the versions that can most often be seen at medieval reenactment festivals. In war, lances were much more like stout spears, long and balanced for one-handed use, and with sharpened tips.

Simply pointing out it's against the rules likely won't change the mind that came with such system, so I'm providing arguments. It keeps things simple. More complexity means less doing fun stuff. Mounted combat is supposed to be superior to footmen. The idea is to get within lance reach, hit and ride outside creature's movement range. The Lance Defenders were the core of Tymanther military forces, a highly trained army of dragonborn soldiers gathered from every clanwho were specialized in fighting with lances and other weapons, both on foot and in aerial combat, mounted on giant bats.

The Lance Defenders membership was restricted only to Tymantheran dragonborn, [6] although a few individuals of other races could be allowed to join their ranks if they had the support of the clan elders. During and after the first Tymanther-Unther Warthe mulani refugees who had joined Namshita's clan were allowed to join the Lance Defenders. The Lance Defenders' forces were divided into platoons named "cohorts".

Each cohort was led by a field commander. Above the lead commander was the Vanquisher itself, who was the supreme general of the Lance Defenders and all other military forces in Tymanther.

Although few Thymari had a knack for magicthe Lance Defenders maintained a number of spellcasters among their ranks. The headquarters of the Lance Defenders, known as the Lance Barracks, were located in the highest place of the City Bastionalong with the Lance Roost that served as the giant bat stables.

The Lance Roost was located in the open space in the center of the interior of Djerad Thymar, allowing the soldiers mounted in the giant bats to freely maneuver within the city.

A giant, rectangular opening was the only exit to the exterior of the city.

The Barracks location was specifically chosen to facilitate the Lance Defenders' duty to protect the city against aerial attacks. Service in the Lance Defenders was mandatory for all Thymari dragonborn who had reached adulthood for two years, but only a small percentage remained after that period and became permanent soldiers. If a Lance Defender was able to get enough promotions, there was the possibility that he or she was deemed fit to be elected as a Vanquisher.

Their giant bats were highly prized by the Thymari, and only members of the Lance Defenders or important guests were permitted to use them, though they were exclusively for use of the Lance Defenders in wartime. A minority of Lance Defenders were selected to become Lance Scouts. Lance Scouts were also expected to track movements of potentially dangerous dragons around the realms. For that reason, when ash giants began to invade Tymanther as part of the green dragon Skuthosiin 's plans as a taaldarax of Brimstone 's xorvintaal[24] they suffered heavy casualties at the hands of the giants.

To improve their chances of defeating the invading giants, Khouryn Skulldark of the Brotherhood of the Griffon was hired by Vanquisher Kepeshkmolik Tarhun to train them in dwarven fighting techniques, [26] as dwarves were renowned giant hunters.

After a few victories, the Vanquisher led all the dragonborn military forces—Lance Defenders, Platinum Cadreprivate clans ' war bands—in a final, desperate battle against the giants on Kythorn 9. The joined Thymari forces were able to drive the giants off their lands. In DRthe Lance Defenders ended the monster invasion of Ruinspokekilling all the invaders in a ratter short battle.

As the Untherite forces advanced against Djerad Thymar, Yrjixtilex Kallan was chosen as the interim Vanquisher on Hammer 6 of DR in order to assemble all of Tymanther's military forces, and sent an unified front against Unther.

On Hammer 10the forces of Gilgeam laid siege to Djerad Thymar while the Chosen of the gods Asmodeus and Azuth conducted a ritual on the city in order to make both gods separate entities again. This wiki.
